How To Troubleshoot Printing Issues?

1. Basic Troubleshooting

 Description Work-flow/ Steps Understanding Guide (Why are we doing this?)
i. Check Internet Explorer Settings including Add-Ons and delete temporary Internet files cache
  1. For accessing add-ons
  2. Press Alt+X from the keyboard
  3. Select “Manage add-ons” option (Make sure all CureMD Add-ons are enabled)For clearing Temporary internet files cache
  4. Press Alt+X from the keyboard
  5. Select “Internet Options”
  6. Click on “Settings”
  7. In browser history click on “View Files”
  8. Now a pop-up will appear
  9. Select all the files and delete them
Add-Ons are used by CureMD to integrate different features within CureMD application (e.g. Scanning, Printing etc.) and we need to ensure that the relevant add-ons are enabled.

Temporary internet files cache is deleted to ensure that all the previously cached files that contain older information & settings are removed and a new session is cached in the directory. This will allow a user to view the latest information.

ii. Turn off Smart Screen Filters and Pop-up Blocker
  1. On the login page press the “Alt” key from the keyboard
  2. Click on “Tools”
  3. Pop-up Blockers (make sure it is turned off)
  4. Smart Screen Filters (make sure it is turned off
Smart screen filter & Pop-up Blocker, blocks CureMD’s ActiveX controls and disabling it helps a user to use ActiveX based features with ease.
iii. Turn off ActiveX Filtering (Make sure that it is not checked otherwise the ActiveX controls would not work
  1. On the login page press the “Alt” key from the keyboard
  2. Click on the “Tools”
  3. Make sure ActiveX Filtering is unchecked
ActiveX Filtering blocks CureMD’s ActiveX controls and disabling it helps a user to use ActiveX based features with ease.
iv. Run Internet Explorer as Administrator to register ActiveX Controls
  1. Right click on internet explorer icon
  2. Select the “Run as Administrator” option
Running internet explorer as an administrator gives the user, permissions to register the ActiveX controls in the local registry.
v. Check Windows uptime. Restart the system if uptime is more than 24 hours
  1. Open Task Manager by right-clicking on the task bar
  2. Click on the Performance tab
  3. Check the Uptime
The more uptime a PC has the higher is the system resources utilization.

2. Intermediate Troubleshooting

i. Check if printer is working locally on windows by printing a test page
  1. Go to Control Panel
  2. Click on Devices and Printers
  3. Right-click on the Printer
  4. Select the “Printer Properties” option
  5. Click on “Print”
This is an important step which will determine if the driver reinstallation is required or the device itself is faulty.
ii. Re-install ActiveX
  1. Download ” All CureMD ActiveX” file from “cloud2.curemd.com/cs”
  2. Run the setup file as an administrator
Make sure to reinstall the ActiveX controls using admin permissions.
iii. Make sure Add-ons are enabled and allowed on all websites
  1. Press Alt+X from the keyboard
  2. Select “Manage add-ons” option
  3. Select “Show All Add-ons” from the drop down on the left
  4. Double click on the ActiveX Controls and select the option “Allow all ActiveX on all sites”
If the Add-ons are disabled, CureMD application would not be able to communicate with the device and the print job will fail.

3. Advanced Troubleshooting

i. Reset Internet Explorer
  1. Press Alt+X from the keyboard
  2. Select “Internet Options”
  3. Click on the “Advanced” tab
  4. Click on the “Reset” option
By resetting Internet Explorer. All the settings are reverted to default and all cookies and temp files are deleted.
ii. Antivirus N/A Advise the client to contact their IT experts and request them to add CureMD and all its ActiveX Controls under the exceptions list.
iii. Reinstall drivers
  1. Go to Control Panel
  2. Select on Programs and features
  3. Uninstall the respective driver
  4. Re-install the drivers using a CD or download them by searching them on Google
In some scenarios drivers get corrupted and reinstalling them is the best way to fix the issue as the corrupted files get replaced.

4. Most Common Printer Issues

a. iActiveX/Crystal Reports Issue
i. Check Crystal Reports ActiveX in manage Add-ons option and allow it on all sites
  1. Press Alt+X from the keyboard
  2. Select “Manage add-ons” option
  3. Select “Show All Add-ons” from the drop down on the left
  4. Double click on the “Crystal Report” ActiveX Control and select the option “Allow all ActiveX on all sites”. Also make sure it’s enabled
If the Add-ons are disabled, CureMD application would not be able to communicate with the device and the print job will fail.
ii. Re-install ActiveX Controls
  1. Download ” All CureMD ActiveX” file from “cloud2.curemd.com/cs”
  2. Run the setup file as an administrator
Make sure to reinstall the ActiveX controls using admin permissions.
iii. Check the “Print Option” settings within CureMD application
  1. Login to CureMD application
  2. Go to “Patient” module
  3. Click on the “Provider Note” component
  4. Open a provider note
  5. Click on the “Print” icon and select “Print Options”
  6. Make sure provider note option is checked otherwise it will print a blank page
This issue is most commonly reported by the clients as they complain that CureMD is printing blank pages. The issue can be fixed simply by selecting the provider note option under “Print Options”.
b. Set Margins/Orientations Issue
i. Check the Print “Print Control ActiveX” in manage Add-ons section and “allow it on all sites
  1. Press Alt+X from the keyboard
  2. Select “Manage add-ons” option
  3. Select “Show All Add-ons” from the drop down on the left
  4. Double click on the “Print Control & Set Margin” ActiveX Control and select the option “Allow all ActiveX on all sites”. Also make sure it’s enabled
If the “Print Control & Set Margin” are not installed properly, the Label margins and orientation settings will not be saved in the system and client will have to configure it every time.
ii. Re-install ActiveX Controls
  1. Download ” All CureMD ActiveX” file from “cloud2.curemd.com/cs”
  2. Run the setup file as an administrator
Make sure to reinstall the ActiveX controls using admin permissions.
iii. Print a test label from Windows
  1. Go to “Control Panel”
  2. Click on “Devices and Printers”
  3. Right click on the respective “Label Printer” and select the “Printing Properties” option
  4. Now, click on the “Print Test Page” option
If the test page is printing it means the device is installed properly and there an issue with CureMD configuration. However, if the test label is not being printed then there is an issue with the drivers or the device.
iv. Label orientation/ dimension issue
  1. While printing a label make sure a user is an MDADMIN user otherwise the dimension and orientation options will not be displayed
  2. Next, adjust the label dimensions using the “Print Preview” option
  3. Print Preview option can be accessed after, the print icon has been clicked.
  4. A pop-up appears showing the label preview, right-click on the pop-up and select the “Print Preview” option. The printing interface will open, click on settings and set the dimensions according to the label size
The orientation and dimensions settings helps a user to print labels accurately without missing any information. The dimensions and orientation is dependent upon the label size.
c. Default Printer Issue
i. Setting a printer as default
  1. Go to “Control Panel”
  2. Click on “Devices and Printers”
  3. Right click on the respective “Printer” and select the “Set as default” option
Setting a printer default ensures that all the printing actions are performed through the selected printer..
d.     Drivers/Configuration Issue
i. Check if printer is working locally on windows by printing a test page
  1. Go to Control Panel
  2. Click on Devices and Printers
  3. Right-click on the Printer
  4. Select the “Printer Properties” option
  5. Click on “Print”
This is an important step which will determine if you need to reinstall the drivers or if the device itself is faulty.
